I just spotted this section so I'll start the ball rolling. What's your 3 favourite Napoleonic armies and why?

For me it:

1) Prussian 1812-15 as the uniforms are simple and cool plus the amount of battles they were involved in and the whole thriller of the liberation of their country after being brought so low and fighting the French to Paris while helping out their allies at the same time.

2) late Saxons: hard fighting, cool uniforms and sadly classed as Napoleonic histories turncoats.

A tricky 1 this

3) Austrians by a nose over Russians as they fought Napoleon forever and have a seriously cool looking army with all manner of oddities in the uniforms of their provinces. And who doesn't love a sea of white uniforms and fancy pants hussars?

With limited "time served" experience, I have to agree on the Prussians, although I am liking the look of the earler uniform because of the cool hats! For me, the ones I am looking forward to sorting are the Wurttembergers, they have fantastic hats! I am not really that fussed on the battlefield performance .. I just love the cool uniforms! Third, Peninsular Brits ..

Great question Paul, I think my top three is:

1. French, I know that all the infantry are a bit similar, but as the Emperor lent his name to the period and the amount of allied armies that can be added to the French army to give them lots of variety, for me they are the clear winner.

2. Prussian, love this army, especially since I found the Calpe range of figures.

3. Brunswick, they may not be the greatest force but I do like their history and uniforms.

Hmm,
1. Prussian post 1808. Love the diversity of uniforms in an army which has been labelled dour by some. That and a habit of turning up just at the right time :0)
2. Westphalian. Saw a picture in a book by David Nash when I was young teenager of some Westies marching in Russia and that was enough for me. Taken 35 years to assemble it though!
3. Tough one this . Possibly the small but hard Baden army.

This has had me thinking for a while...

1. French - they had such a huge variety of units and the uniforms always looked spectacular - Dutch grenadiers, Dutch lancers, Swiss regiments, Polish, Mamelukes etc etc.
2. Russians - after taking a bit of a kicking they put a huge amount of men in the field. I find it kind of sad that serfs from Russia would fight so hard against a regime that could have benefited them.

3. Probably punt for the Army of Italy, they've got some nice uniforms and always seemed to pop up somewhere or another.

I'm new to the website but finding it really interesting. My 3 favourites are of the smaller armies:
1. Italy inc Neopolitan- all white uniforms with lots different facing colours. Good mix of elite & line troops.
2. Wurtemburg Army- I've got to like them, Im just about to replace our old mini-fig battalions. No point painting anything you don't like.
3. Army of King Joseph- not very good fighters but with a good mix of facings etc they look good on the table.

1. Saxons, best looking uniforms, the discipline in the troops and toughness of them was extraordinary.
2. Bavarians, got me into Napoleonics, first troops I painted and the helmets look great.
3. Tough but I'd say Wurrttemberg, close call with the Duchy of Warsaw.
